Urban Transformations and Climate Change

Harvard GSD: SES-5447, Course ID: 220887

Course instructor: Hannah Teicher

Term: Spring 2023

In an era of climate crisis and climate breakdown, the time for incremental planning has passed. This seminar will grapple with notions of urban transformation, with climate change as both a driver of and instrument for change. The course will begin with a brief survey of current concepts of transformation and then delve into three major thematic areas where transformative planning and practice are gaining traction: climate migration, fossil fuel non-proliferation, and planning for sufficiency. Through grounded projects, the seminar will offer students the opportunity to concretely answer how planning can work toward transformational change. Image courtesy of Wagon Landscaping.
