My research project investigates how strategies of racial segregation in South Africa were formulated and later applied to the making of colonial state structures in India. I analyze how practices of dividing urban spaces were translated into ideologies of racialized governance across the Indian Ocean world, thereby exploring the origins of colonial governmentality that connects Asia and Africa.
