SUMMARY:Urban Intermedia: The City Between Experience and Information
DESCRIPTION:
	<drupal-media data-entity-type="media" data-entity-uuid="500b4ebd-fd61-4a44-8a68-2c045a918573" data-view-mode="hwp_large"></drupal-media>

The irreducible complexity of the contemporary urban makes communication and collaboration across disciplinary borders essential, and calls for new intermedial research methods that make it possible to examine multiple factors in unstable conditions from a range of disciplinary perspectives. This daylong workshop engages directly with methods and media of urban research. It explores the ways in which the digitized information, communication and media technologies we use to visualize and understand the contemporary urban not only condition what we see, but also shape the kinds of knowledge that our research produces and the ways in which we conceptualize the urban itself. These conditions call for direct critical engagement with the recursive and mutually remediating relationship between the tools and objects of our research. We will thus explore how new intermedial and cross-disciplinary methods allow us to frame questions that bridge sites and disciplines to probe multidimensional conditions of the contemporary urban.

	WORKSHOP LEADERS

	Eve Blau
Adjunct Professor of the History and Theory of Urban Form and Design
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Website:http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/#/people/eve-blau.html
Email: eblau@gsd.harvard.edu

	Julie Buckler
Samuel Hazzard Cross Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and of Comparative Literature
Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures
Director of the Humanities Program at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study
Harvard University
Website: http://faculty.slavic.fas.harvard.edu/julie-buckler/home
Email: buckler@fas.harvard.edu

	Erik Ghenoiu
Research Program Manager, Harvard-Mellon Initiative on Urbanism
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Website: http://mellonurbanism.harvard.edu/portfolio_page/erik-ghenoiu/
Email: eghenoiu@gsd.harvard.edu

	Robert Pietrusko
Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning
Harvard Graduate School of Design
Website: http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/#/people/robert-pietrusko.html
Email: pietrusko@gsd.harvard.edu

	Panel I: The Mediated Urban

	Moderator: Eve Blau, GSD, Harvard
Lev Manovich, CUNY Graduate Center
Mark Shepard, SUNY Buffalo
Orit Halpern, New School for Social Research

	Panel II: Narrative
Moderator: Julie Buckler, FAS, Harvard
Robb Moss, FAS, Harvard
Peter Galison, FAS, Harvard
Laura Frahm, FAS, Harvard

Panel III: Public Data and Politics

	Moderator: Robert Pietrusko, GSD, Harvard
Dietmar Offenhuber, Northeastern University
Laura Kurgan, Columbia University
Catherine D’Ignazio, Emerson College and MIT

Image: Robert Gerard Pietrusko/Warning Office: Cartographic Grounds (still)
