Coptic Institutions and Development of the Egyptian Public Sphere (ca. 1900-1920)

The Coptic Orthodox community constitutes the largest Christian community in the Middle East today and has historically played a central role in Egyptian society. Still, the socio-political and intellectual contributions of Copts remain scantly studied. This digital project helps remedy the gap in the literature by cartographically visualizing the urban distribution of the Coptic community and Coptic-owned institutions between 1890-1920, a period marked by the rapid consolidation of the Egyptian nation state. Ultimately, the maps and data produced for this digital project will generate new opportunities for research, collaboration, and teaching
