Born in Ankara, Prof. Güvenç graduated from the Department of City and Regional Planning of Middle East Technical University in 1976. He received his Master’s Degree in 1979. He worked in the Middle East Technical University from 1983 to 2005.
Prof. Güvenç was the youngest member of the METU planning team who prepared the structure plan for Ankara 2015 and worked in several urban research projects on the social and Economic Geography of Istanbul including The Development of Greater Istanbul Metropolitan Area and Low Cost Housing (sponsored by the IDRC of Canada). Professor Güvenç taught undergraduate and graduate courses on Urban Geography, Urban Sociology, Planning Theory, Migration, Methodology, in Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Bilgi University, Istanbul Şehir and Bosphorous Universities.
His academic interests concentrate on intra-metropolitan industrial geography, urban history and data visualization. He was the economic and social geography curator of the Istanbul 1910-2010 exposition, sponsored under the Istanbul 2010 European Cultural Capital of Europe program. He co-authored The Development of Greater Istanbul Metropolitan Area, Industry in Ankara, (Emlak Bankası 1926-1998): The institutional history of The Real Estate Bank of Turkey the Electoral Atlas of Turkey 1950-2009, Tracing Istanbul, and was the editor in Old Istanbulites New Istanbulites (in Turkish)
Professor Güvenç was the Vice President of Istanbul Bilgi University between 2007-2010, and the president of the History Foundation between 2008 and 2011. Prof. Güvenç established and directed the Center for Urban Studies of Istanbul Sehir University between 2010 and 2014 where he carried out a comprehensive study on internal migration in Turkey sponsored by the Scientific and Technical Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and research projects on social and economic urban history and geography of Istanbul, Izmir and Bursa metropolitan areas.
He was an advisor to Emre Arolat Architects (EAA team) in international design competitions. Since 2013, he is the co-producer of the Metropolitan Politics program of the independent Open Radio. He was also a member of the Scientific Committee of the pavilion of Turkey in the Venice Architectural Biennale 2014. Prof. Güvenc has acted as an Advisor to the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey in the last three years where he worked on the problems of visualization and communication of big data.
He has recently been nominated as Director of the Istanbul Studies Center of Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey.
